Latest A-Level Taster Sessions - Report & Pictures
Posted on: 26/01/2023We are hosting a series of taster sessions which aim to give students who are applying to Harris Rainham Sixth Form an insight into the subject at A-Level.
Each session will delve into a topic on the A-Level course and allow students to experience the content which they will be studying beyond GCSE. The session will also outline the specification requirements and the ways the subject will be examined, as well as recommended pre-reading.
Over the past couple of weeks, we have delivered sessions for Product Design, PE, Chemistry, Maths and Art. Our upcoming sessions are: Latin, Computer Science, Geography, Business, Physics, RE and Media. Sign up to these sessions here.
Art from A4 paper
Students interested in taking Art A-level participated in a session where they completed a mini A-level project covering all assessment objectives in just half an hour. Students created a sculpture made from a sheet of A4 paper inspired by artists and then photographed and edited their responses with some amazing results!
Psychology discussions
Students in Psychology were introduced to two studies. Firstly, they discussed eyewitness testimony accounts and how incorrect information given to an eyewitness can distort what people remember about an event. Secondly students investigated the Milgram study (1963) which measured the willingness of participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts conflicting with their personal conscience. Both studies are incredibly interesting and sparked some great thoughts and discussions.
Chemists and product designers
Our aspiring chemists carried out a practical to identify the ions within a mixture of two salts. Students used separation techniques and flame tests to assist their investigation.
Our Product Design students developed their woodwork skills, including sanding and sawing, to create a prototype. Students had to make accurate measurements and carefully assemble their finished product.
Our upcoming sessions are: Latin, Computer Science, Geography, Business, Physics, RE and Media. Please sign up to these sessions here.
