Physics

Welcome to the A-level Physics programme at Harris Rainham Sixth Form, where we offer an enriching and rigorous learning experience for aspiring physicists.

Our AQA A-Level Physics course is designed to foster a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of the universe, complemented by hands-on practical work and the development of essential mathematical skills. Its aims are to:

  • Develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other
  • Develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods
  • Develop competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills
  • Develop curiosity, interest and enthusiasm for Physics, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject
  • Know how physics has facilitated the development human society, industry and civilisation through the ages and will continue to do so in the future
  • Understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.

Year 12

Year 12 sets the foundation for your A-Level Physics journey. You will embark on an exploration of measurements and their errors, understanding the significance of precision and accuracy in scientific measurements.

Particles and radiation will introduce you to the fascinating world of subatomic particles and the intriguing properties of radiation. Waves will captivate your curiosity as you delve into the behaviour of waves, both mechanical and electromagnetic.

Mechanics and materials will reveal the principles governing the motion of objects and the properties of materials under different conditions. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of electricity, from circuits and resistance to electrical power and energy transfer. Further mechanics will take you on a deeper mathematical journey, exploring concepts such as momentum, circular motion, and oscillations.

Year 13

Year 13 promises to take your knowledge to new heights. Thermal physics will delve into the behaviour of gases and thermal energy, unravelling the mysteries of heat and temperature. Fields and their consequences will unveil the intricate relationship between forces and fields, as you explore electric and magnetic fields. Nuclear physics will reveal the secrets of the atomic nucleus, from radioactivity to the principles of nuclear reactions.

As part of our A-Level Physics programme, you have the opportunity to explore Astrophysics, an optional topic that delves into the awe-inspiring phenomena of celestial bodies, the birth and death of stars, and the structure of the universe.

Throughout the course, practical work is a cornerstone of your learning journey. You will engage in various hands-on experiments, honing your scientific skills and developing a deep appreciation for the scientific method. Practical skills are not only central to the course but also contribute to the third paper of your A-level exams, which focuses on the optional topic and your prowess in practical techniques.

At the end of the two-year course, you will sit three papers, each lasting two hours. These papers will assess your understanding of the topics covered and your ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. The third paper will emphasise your practical skills and knowledge of the optional topic.

Furthermore, our A-Level Physics program includes a practical endorsement, which is highly valued by universities, especially for students pursuing technical courses. This practical endorsement recognises your competency and proficiency in conducting experiments and analysing data, preparing you for future scientific pursuits.

By completing our AQA A-Level Physics course, you will not only attain a prestigious qualification but also develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical abilities that will serve you well in any future academic or professional pursuit.

We are committed to providing a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment, preparing you for success in your academic journey and beyond. Join us at Harris Rainham Sixth Form and embark on an exciting adventure into the captivating realm of A-Level Physics.
