Media Studies
Our Key Stage 5 Media curriculum echoes the Key Stage 4 curriculum through the way it strives to create critical, curious, and informed analysts.
The media is central to our students' lives and we deliver powerful knowledge through the main key concepts which equips students to be active investigators into the media.
Our curriculum is designed to encourage students to question and explore the media messages delivered to them and look at how the media influences society. Students will understand the fundamental relationship between theoretical framework and practical work where they can develop production skills through the production brief.
Becoming media creators will give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge, manipulate the media, and create media messages themselves, equipping them for creative career paths beyond A-Level.
Our A-Level course exposes students to a range of rich and stimulating products, as well as exploring their history and impact on society. These products will be explored through the theoretical framework and concepts which are revisited to support the retention of powerful knowledge.
The nature of the course and interleaved content means that students develop strong knowledge and understanding which will enable them to become confident critics of the digital and traditional media products explored.
Key skills and understanding developed on the course include debating, discursive writing, reflecting on complex theories of media studies and understanding the digitally convergent nature of modern media. Opportunities are also given to delve into the social, cultural, political, and economic role of the media and how it constructs and creates meaning to audiences.
Students are offered a choice of production briefs, which enables them to pursue their own media interests. Becoming media makers provides students with opportunities to showcase their craftsmanship and mastery theoretically and creatively.
Overall, our aim is to develop academic scholars who have the appropriation of powerful knowledge to become active investigators and designers in their lives beyond Harris Rainham Sixth Form and in the ever-changing media landscape.
