Personal, Relationships, Sex and Health Education
We are committed to ensuring that all our students receive the appropriate provision to improve their knowledge and understanding of relationships, sex and relationships and healthy living, building on what they should have learned at secondary school.
Young adults face complex pressures and dilemmas in developing mature relationships and preparing for their futures. They need to face such tasks confident in their factual knowledge, as well as being given the opportunity to discuss and shape their feelings, attitudes and decision-making.
As part of a student’s weekly timetable, they have three dedicated weekly slots with their tutor. During these sessions, tutors deliver PRSHE. Students learn in an age-appropriate way, how to keep themselves safe, physically, mentally and emotionally. Some of the content that students learn links to the ‘contextual’ risks that students face living in and around Rainham and London. Content delivered include:
- Respectful relationships, including friendships
- Intimate and sexual relationships, including sexual health
- Online and media
- Careers and finance
- UCAS and future pathways
- Revision techniques and effective habits
- Health and disease
- Drugs and alcohol
- child criminal exploitation, including county lines
- child sexual exploitation, including for boys
- protection from radicalisation, extremism and terrorism
Our programme therefore focuses on building from what students would have learned in secondary school, extending their knowledge and developing a deeper understanding as they prepare for employment, independence and their highly successful lives ahead. All content is mapped into a coherent and consciously mapped curriculum which comprises of four main these: Physical health and emotional wellbeing, safe and respectful relationships, responsible active citizens and academic scholars and future pathways.
Assemblies tend to take place weekly and are predominantly delivered by of head of year and senior leadership team. The assemblies complement the PRSHE curriculum so everything works in synergy. Assemblies are one of the times when guest speakers come in to speak to students.
Our PRSHE policy can be found on our Teaching and Learning page.
